Problem 14 of 16

Let ABCDABCD be a convex quadrilateral whose diagonals ACAC and BDBD intersect at point EE. If BC=6BC = 6, DA=8DA = 8 and the triangles △AEB\triangle AEB and △CED\triangle CED have the same area, what is the ratio of the area of △BEC\triangle BEC over the area of △DEA\triangle DEA?

Answer choices

Solution

Since Area(△AEB)=Area(△CED)\mathrm{Area}(\triangle AEB) = \mathrm{Area}(\triangle CED), we have Area(△ABD)=Area(△AEB)+Area(△DEA)=Area(△CED)+Area(△DEA)=Area(△CDA). \mathrm{Area}(\triangle ABD) = \mathrm{Area}(\triangle AEB) + \mathrm{Area}(\triangle DEA) = \mathrm{Area}(\triangle CED) + \mathrm{Area}(\triangle DEA) = \mathrm{Area}(\triangle CDA). So the distances from BB and CC to the line DADA are equal, hence BC∥DABC \parallel DA and ABCDABCD is a trapezoid. Then △BEC∼△DEA\triangle BEC \sim \triangle DEA and Area(△BEC)Area(△DEA)=(BCDA)2=916. \frac{\mathrm{Area}(\triangle BEC)}{\mathrm{Area}(\triangle DEA)} = \left(\frac{BC}{DA}\right)^2 = \frac{9}{16}. The answer is (E).
