2023/24 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 5

Problem 5 of 16

The number of integers xx satisfying (x2−4)2≤(2−x)2(x^2 - 4)^2 \le (2-x)^2 is

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

Observe that x=2x = 2 satisfies the inequality. When x≠2x \ne 2 then xx must satisfy (x−2)2(x+2)2(2−x)2≤1, \frac{(x-2)^2(x+2)^2}{(2-x)^2} \le 1, that is (x+2)2≤1(x+2)^2 \le 1. Thus −3≤x≤−1-3 \le x \le -1. There are four integer solutions: x=−3,−2,−1,2x = -3,-2,-1,2. The answer is (E).
