2010/11 AHSMC Part 1 Problem 14

Problem 14 of 16

Let f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 and g(x)=x4g(x) = x^4. We apply ff and gg alternatively to form f(x)=x2,g(f(x))=g(x2)=(x2)4=x8,f(g(f(x)))=f(x8)=(x8)2=x16, f(x) = x^2,\quad g(f(x)) = g(x^2) = (x^2)^4 = x^8,\quad f(g(f(x))) = f(x^8) = (x^8)^2 = x^{16}, and so on. After we have applied ff 5050 times and gg 4949 times, the answer is xnx^n where nn is

Solution

Each application of ff doubles the exponent while each application of gg quadruples the exponent. After 5050 applications of ff and 4949 applications of gg, the exponent has been doubled 50+2×49=14850 + 2 \times 49 = 148 times so that n=2148n = 2^{148}. The answer is (C).
