Problem 15 of 16

Triangle ABCABC has area 11. XX, YY are points on the side ABAB and ZZ a point on the side ACAC such that XY=2AXXY = 2AX, XZXZ is parallel to YCYC and YZYZ is parallel to BCBC. The area of XYZXYZ is

Solution

Denote the area of triangle TT by [T][T]. Since triangles AXZAXZ and AYCAYC are similar, ZC=2AZZC = 2AZ. Since triangles AYZAYZ and ABCABC are similar, YB=2AYYB = 2AY. It follows that [XYZ]=23[AYZ]=29[AYC]=227[ABC]=227. [XYZ] = \frac{2}{3}[AYZ] = \frac{2}{9}[AYC] = \frac{2}{27}[ABC] = \frac{2}{27}. The answer is (B).
