Answer choices

Solution

When n3−3n+2n^3 - 3n + 2 is divided by 2n+12n + 1, the quotient is n22−n4−118\frac{n^2}{2} - \frac{n}{4} - \frac{11}{8} and the remainder is 278\frac{27}{8}. Hence 8(n3−3n+2)=(2n+1)(4n2−2n−11)+278(n^3 - 3n + 2) = (2n+1)(4n^2 - 2n - 11) + 27, so that 2n+12n+1 divides n3−3n+2n^3 - 3n + 2 if and only if it divides 2727. The set of all values of nn for which 2n+12n+1 divides 2727 is {−14,−5,−2,−1,0,1,4,13}\{-14, -5, -2, -1, 0, 1, 4, 13\}, and there are 88 such values. The answer is (E).
