Problem 11 of 16

AA and BB are positive integers such that (i) A+B=2019A + B = 2019, (ii) all the digits of AA are odd and all the digits of BB are even, and (iii) AA and BB are as close together as possible with these properties. The largest prime number dividing into BB is

Solution

For AA and BB to be closest together, the first digit of the larger number must be 11 (rather than 22), so A>BA > B. Thus the largest possible value for BB is 888888, which works because it means that A=1131A = 1131, which does have all odd digits. Since 888=23⋅3⋅37888 = 2^3 \cdot 3 \cdot 37, the answer is 3737. The answer is (E).
