Solution

Consider the circle centred at OO that is circumscribed to △ABC\triangle ABC. Let EBCEBC be the isosceles triangle containing OO and inscribed in this circle. Since ∠BEC=∠BAC=60∘\angle BEC = \angle BAC = 60^\circ, △EBC\triangle EBC is in fact equilateral. Let EF⊥BCEF \perp BC, OG⊥ADOG \perp AD.

By simple calculations one obtains EF=73,OE=OA=1433,OG=FD=5,GA=1133,GD=OF=733. EF = 7\sqrt{3},\quad OE = OA = \frac{14\sqrt{3}}{3},\quad OG = FD = 5,\quad GA = \frac{11\sqrt{3}}{3},\quad GD = OF = \frac{7\sqrt{3}}{3}. Hence AD=63AD = 6\sqrt{3} and the area of △ABC\triangle ABC is equal to 42342\sqrt{3}. The answer is (C).

Alternative solution: Let θ=∠BAD\theta = \angle BAD, and x=ADx = AD. In △ABD\triangle ABD, tan⁡θ=BDx=12x\tan \theta = \dfrac{BD}{x} = \dfrac{12}{x} and in △ADC\triangle ADC, tan⁡(π3−θ)=DCx=2x\tan\bigl(\dfrac{\pi}{3} - \theta\bigr) = \dfrac{DC}{x} = \dfrac{2}{x}. Hence 3=tan⁡π3=tan⁡(θ+(π/3−θ))=tan⁡θ+tan⁡(π/3−θ)1−tan⁡θtan⁡(π/3−θ)=12x+2x1−24x2=14xx2−24. \sqrt{3} = \tan \frac{\pi}{3} = \tan\bigl(\theta + (\pi/3 - \theta)\bigr) = \frac{\tan\theta + \tan(\pi/3 - \theta)}{1 - \tan\theta \tan(\pi/3 - \theta)} = \frac{\frac{12}{x} + \frac{2}{x}}{1 - \frac{24}{x^2}} = \frac{14x}{x^2 - 24}. Solving for xx one obtains x=63x = 6\sqrt{3} and thus the area of △ABC\triangle ABC is equal to 42342\sqrt{3}.
