Solution

We can rewrite the inequality as 2(x−y)2+(k−2)(x2+y2)≥02(x-y)^2 + (k-2)(x^2 + y^2) \ge 0. Putting x=y=1x = y = 1 one obtains k≥2k \ge 2. On the other hand, if k≥2k \ge 2 this inequality is true for any xx, yy real numbers. Hence the minimum value of kk is 22. The answer is (C).

Alternative approach: The given inequality is equivalent to kx2−4xy+ky2≥0kx^2 - 4xy + ky^2 \ge 0 for any real numbers xx, yy. Putting x=y=1x = y = 1 one obtains k≥2k \ge 2. On the other hand for k≥2k \ge 2, kx2−4xy+ky2≥2x2+2y2−4xy=2(x−y)2≥0kx^2 - 4xy + ky^2 \ge 2x^2 + 2y^2 - 4xy = 2(x-y)^2 \ge 0 for any x,y∈Rx, y \in \mathbb{R}.
