Problem 5 of 16

In how many different ways can you write 202020192020^{2019} as the product of two positive integers xx and yy with no common prime factor? Here, two products of the same numbers in a different order are considered the same.

Solution

Suppose 20202019=xy2020^{2019} = xy. Since 2020=10⋅202=22⋅5⋅101, 2020 = 10 \cdot 202 = 2^2 \cdot 5 \cdot 101, where 101101 is prime, we have xy=20202019=24038⋅52019⋅1012019. xy = 2020^{2019} = 2^{4038} \cdot 5^{2019} \cdot 101^{2019}. If xx and yy are relatively prime, each of 240382^{4038}, 520195^{2019} and 1012019101^{2019} is a factor of either xx or yy. There are 2×2×2=82 \times 2 \times 2 = 8 possibilities but since two products of the same numbers in a different order are considered the same, 44 of these possibilities are double counted. Thus, there are 8−4=48 - 4 = 4 possibilities. The answer is (C).
