Solution

No two containers have the same weight otherwise we would have a duplicate weighing. Let w1<w2<w3<w4w_1 < w_2 < w_3 < w_4 be the weights of the four containers. Then we must have w1+w2=215w_1 + w_2 = 215, w1+w3=235w_1 + w_3 = 235, w3+w4=310w_3 + w_4 = 310 and w2+w4=290w_2 + w_4 = 290. There are two cases: w1+w4=260w_1 + w_4 = 260, w2+w3=265w_2 + w_3 = 265 giving w4=167.5w_4 = 167.5 and w1+w4=265w_1 + w_4 = 265, w2+w3=260w_2 + w_3 = 260 giving w4=170w_4 = 170. The answer is (E).
