AMC 12 Mock Exam 4 Problem 1

Problem 1 of 25

Identical plastic cups are stacked one inside another. A stack of 1212 cups is 4040 centimeters tall, and a stack of 2020 cups is 5656 centimeters tall. How many centimeters tall is a stack of 3030 of these cups?

Solution

Adding 88 cups raises the stack by 56−40=1656-40=16 cm, so each additional cup adds 22 cm. Going from 2020 to 3030 cups adds 10⋅2=2010\cdot2=20 cm, for a height of 56+20=7656+20=\boxed{76} cm. (Indeed the height is 2n+162n+16 for nn cups, and 2⋅30+16=762\cdot30+16=76. The height is not proportional to nn: scaling the 1212-cup stack proportionally gives the distractor 100100, and scaling the 2020-cup stack gives 8484.)
