AMC 12 Mock Exam 4 Problem 25

Problem 25 of 25

Jun rolls a fair six-sided die repeatedly. He stops immediately after the first roll that shows a number strictly less than the number shown on the roll just before it. For example, if his rolls are 22, 22, 55, 33, he stops after the fourth roll. What is the expected number of times Jun rolls the die?

Solution

Let NN be the number of rolls. For k≥0k\ge0, N>kN>k exactly when the first kk rolls form a nondecreasing sequence (for k=0,1k=0,1 this is automatic). A nondecreasing sequence of length kk from {1,…,6}\{1,\dots,6\} is determined by how many times each face appears, so there are (k+55)\binom{k+5}{5} of them (stars and bars), and P(N>k)=(k+55)6−kP(N>k)=\binom{k+5}{5}6^{-k}.

Since NN is a positive integer, N=∑k≥0[N>k]N=\sum_{k\ge0}[N>k], so E[N]=∑k≥0P(N>k)=∑k≥0(k+55)(16)kE[N]=\sum_{k\ge0}P(N>k)=\sum_{k\ge0}\binom{k+5}{5}\left(\tfrac16\right)^k.

To evaluate this sum, let x=16x=\frac16 and multiply six copies of the geometric series 1+x+x2+⋯=11−x=651+x+x^2+\cdots=\frac{1}{1-x}=\frac65: (65)6=∏j=16(∑aj≥0xaj)=∑a1,…,a6≥0xa1+⋯+a6.\left(\tfrac65\right)^6=\prod_{j=1}^{6}\left(\sum_{a_j\ge0}x^{a_j}\right)=\sum_{a_1,\dots,a_6\ge0}x^{a_1+\cdots+a_6}. (All terms are positive, so expanding and regrouping is legitimate.) Grouping the terms by k=a1+⋯+a6k=a_1+\cdots+a_6, the number of terms with a given kk is the number of ways to write kk as an ordered sum of six nonnegative integers, which is (k+55)\binom{k+5}{5} by stars and bars. Hence ∑k≥0(k+55)xk=(65)6\sum_{k\ge0}\binom{k+5}5x^k=\left(\frac65\right)^6, and E[N]=(65)6=4665615625≈2.99.E[N]=\boxed{\left(\tfrac65\right)^6}=\frac{46656}{15625}\approx2.99.
