AMC 12 Mock Exam 4 Problem 22

Problem 22 of 25

A function ff is defined for all real numbers except 00 and 11, and satisfies f(x)+f(11−x)=xf(x)+f\left(\frac{1}{1-x}\right)=x for every real number xx other than 00 and 11. What is f(3)f(3)?

Answer choices

Solution

Let g(x)=11−xg(x)=\frac1{1-x}. Then g(3)=−12g(3)=-\frac12, g(−12)=23g\left(-\frac12\right)=\frac23, and g(23)=3g\left(\frac23\right)=3; none of these is 00 or 11. Writing a=f(3)a=f(3), b=f(−12)b=f\left(-\frac12\right), c=f(23)c=f\left(\frac23\right), the equation at x=3,−12,23x=3,-\frac12,\frac23 gives a+b=3,b+c=−12,c+a=23.a+b=3,\qquad b+c=-\tfrac12,\qquad c+a=\tfrac23. Adding, a+b+c=12(3−12+23)=1912a+b+c=\frac12\left(3-\frac12+\frac23\right)=\frac{19}{12}, so a=1912−(b+c)=1912+12=2512a=\frac{19}{12}-(b+c)=\frac{19}{12}+\frac12=\boxed{\tfrac{25}{12}}.

(Such an ff exists: in general, solving the same 3×33\times3 system at each orbit {x,g(x),g(g(x))}\{x,g(x),g(g(x))\} defines ff consistently.)
