AMC 12 Mock Exam 4 Problem 6

Problem 6 of 25

How many ordered pairs (a,b)(a,b) of positive integers satisfy ab=2592ab=2592 and gcd⁡(a,b)=6\gcd(a,b)=6?

Answer choices

Solution

Write a=6xa=6x, b=6yb=6y with gcd⁡(x,y)=1\gcd(x,y)=1. Then 36xy=2592=25⋅3436xy=2592=2^5\cdot3^4, so xy=23⋅32=72xy=2^3\cdot3^2=72. Since xx and yy are coprime, the factor 232^3 goes entirely to xx or entirely to yy, and likewise for 323^2. That gives 2⋅2=42\cdot2=\boxed{4} ordered pairs: (x,y)=(1,72),(8,9),(9,8),(72,1)(x,y)=(1,72),(8,9),(9,8),(72,1).
