AMC 12 Mock Exam 4 Problem 19

Problem 19 of 25

Regular hexagon ABCDEFABCDEF has side length 22. A point PP inside the hexagon is chosen so that the area of △PAB\triangle PAB is 11 and the area of △PCD\triangle PCD is 22, as shown (the figure is not necessarily drawn to scale). What is the area of △PEF\triangle PEF?

Solution

Extend sides AB‾\overline{AB}, CD‾\overline{CD}, and EF‾\overline{EF}. Their lines bound an equilateral triangle TT of side 3⋅2=63\cdot2=6 that contains the hexagon (the hexagon is TT with three corner triangles of side 22 removed). For a point PP inside TT, the sum of its distances to the three sides of TT equals the height of TT, which is 333\sqrt3. (Split TT into three triangles with apex PP: 12⋅6 (d1+d2+d3)=[T]=93\frac12\cdot6\,(d_1+d_2+d_3)=[T]=9\sqrt3.)

Since AB=CD=EF=2AB=CD=EF=2, the areas [PAB][PAB], [PCD][PCD], [PEF][PEF] equal 12⋅2⋅d=d\frac12\cdot2\cdot d=d for the corresponding distances. Hence [PAB]+[PCD]+[PEF]=33[PAB]+[PCD]+[PEF]=3\sqrt3, and [PEF]=33−1−2=33−3[PEF]=3\sqrt3-1-2=\boxed{3\sqrt3-3}. (This equals half the hexagon's area, 63/26\sqrt3/2, minus 33.)
