AMC 12 Mock Exam 4 Problem 17

Problem 17 of 25

Square ABCDABCD has side length 11. Point EE lies on side BC‾\overline{BC} with BE=13BE=\tfrac13, and point FF lies on side CD‾\overline{CD} so that ∠EAF=45∘\angle EAF=45^\circ, as shown (the figure is not necessarily drawn to scale). What is the area of △AEF\triangle AEF?

Solution

Let α=∠BAE\alpha=\angle BAE, so tan⁡α=BEAB=13\tan\alpha=\frac{BE}{AB}=\frac13 and ∠DAF=90∘−45∘−α=45∘−α\angle DAF=90^\circ-45^\circ-\alpha=45^\circ-\alpha. Then DF=tan⁡(45∘−α)=1−131+13=12.DF=\tan(45^\circ-\alpha)=\frac{1-\frac13}{1+\frac13}=\frac12. Rotate △ADF\triangle ADF by 90∘90^\circ about AA so that DD goes to BB; FF goes to a point F′F' on line BCBC on the opposite side of BB from CC, with BF′=DF=12BF'=DF=\frac12 and AF′=AFAF'=AF. Then ∠EAF′=∠EAB+∠BAF′=α+(45∘−α)=45∘=∠EAF\angle EAF'=\angle EAB+\angle BAF'=\alpha+(45^\circ-\alpha)=45^\circ=\angle EAF, so △AEF≅△AEF′\triangle AEF\cong\triangle AEF' (SAS). Triangle AEF′AEF' has base EF′=BE+BF′=13+12=56EF'=BE+BF'=\frac13+\frac12=\frac56 on line BCBC and height AB=1AB=1, so [AEF]=[AEF′]=12⋅56⋅1=512.[AEF]=[AEF']=\frac12\cdot\frac56\cdot1=\boxed{\tfrac5{12}}. (Check with coordinates A=(0,0)A=(0,0), E=(1,13)E=(1,\tfrac13), F=(12,1)F=(\tfrac12,1): the area is 12∣1⋅1−13⋅12∣=512\frac12\left|1\cdot1-\tfrac13\cdot\tfrac12\right|=\frac5{12}.)
