Solution

Let dd be the distance in miles. The riding time is d12+d18=5d36\frac{d}{12}+\frac{d}{18}=\frac{5d}{36} hours, and the waiting time is 13\frac13 hour. Since 5 h 20 min=1635\text{ h }20\text{ min}=\frac{16}{3} hours, 5d36+13=163  ⟹  5d36=5  ⟹  d=36.\frac{5d}{36}+\frac13=\frac{16}{3}\implies \frac{5d}{36}=5\implies d=36.
