AMC 12 Mock Exam 1 Problem 12

Problem 12 of 25

In triangle ABCABC, AB=10AB=10, BC=12BC=12, and CA=16CA=16. A circle passes through AA and BB and is tangent to line BCBC at BB. The circle meets side AC‾\overline{AC} again at a point DD other than AA. What is BDBD?

Solution

Figure for this problem

Since line BCBC is tangent to the circle at BB, the power of the point CC gives CB2=CD⋅CACB^2=CD\cdot CA, so CD=12216=9CD=\frac{12^2}{16}=9. (As CD<CACD<CA, the point DD lies on side AC‾\overline{AC}.)

Now CDCB=912=34=CBCA\frac{CD}{CB}=\frac{9}{12}=\frac34=\frac{CB}{CA} and triangles CDBCDB and CBACBA share the angle at CC, so △CDB∼△CBA\triangle CDB\sim\triangle CBA with ratio 34\frac34. Therefore BD=34⋅AB=34⋅10=152BD=\frac34\cdot AB=\frac34\cdot10=\boxed{\tfrac{15}{2}}.
