AMC 12 Mock Exam 1 Problem 13

Problem 13 of 25

What is the sum of all real numbers xx in the interval [0,2π)[0,2\pi) that satisfy sin⁡2x=cos⁡3x\sin 2x=\cos 3x?

Answer choices

Solution

Since cos⁡3x=sin⁡(π2−3x)\cos3x=\sin\left(\frac\pi2-3x\right), the equation is sin⁡2x=sin⁡(π2−3x)\sin 2x=\sin\left(\frac\pi2-3x\right), which holds exactly when either

(i) 2x=π2−3x+2πk2x=\frac\pi2-3x+2\pi k, i.e., x=π10+2πk5x=\frac{\pi}{10}+\frac{2\pi k}{5}, or

(ii) 2x=π−(π2−3x)+2πk2x=\pi-\left(\frac\pi2-3x\right)+2\pi k, i.e., x=−π2−2πkx=-\frac\pi2-2\pi k.

In [0,2π)[0,2\pi), family (i) gives the five values π10,π2,9π10,13π10,17π10\frac{\pi}{10},\frac{\pi}{2},\frac{9\pi}{10},\frac{13\pi}{10},\frac{17\pi}{10} (for k=0,…,4k=0,\dots,4), whose sum is π10(1+5+9+13+17)=9π2\frac{\pi}{10}(1+5+9+13+17)=\frac{9\pi}{2}. Family (ii) gives the single value x=3π2x=\frac{3\pi}{2}. These six values are distinct, so the sum is 9π2+3π2=6π\frac{9\pi}2+\frac{3\pi}2=\boxed{6\pi}.
