AMC 12 Mock Exam 1 Problem 15

Problem 15 of 25

Real numbers xx, yy, and zz satisfy x+y+z=6x+y+z=6, x2+y2+z2=14x^2+y^2+z^2=14, and x3+y3+z3=36x^3+y^3+z^3=36. What is x4+y4+z4x^4+y^4+z^4?

Solution

Let e1=x+y+z=6e_1=x+y+z=6, e2=xy+yz+zxe_2=xy+yz+zx, e3=xyze_3=xyz, and let pk=xk+yk+zkp_k=x^k+y^k+z^k. From p2=e12−2e2p_2=e_1^2-2e_2 we get 14=36−2e214=36-2e_2, so e2=11e_2=11. From p3=e13−3e1e2+3e3p_3=e_1^3-3e_1e_2+3e_3 we get 36=216−198+3e336=216-198+3e_3, so e3=6e_3=6.

Each of x,y,zx,y,z satisfies t3=e1t2−e2t+e3t^3=e_1t^2-e_2t+e_3. Multiplying by tt and summing over t=x,y,zt=x,y,z gives p4=e1p3−e2p2+e3p1=6⋅36−11⋅14+6⋅6=216−154+36=98p_4=e_1p_3-e_2p_2+e_3p_1=6\cdot36-11\cdot14+6\cdot6=216-154+36=\boxed{98}.

(Indeed x,y,zx,y,z are the roots of t3−6t2+11t−6=(t−1)(t−2)(t−3)t^3-6t^2+11t-6=(t-1)(t-2)(t-3), and 1+16+81=981+16+81=98.)
