AMC 12 Mock Exam 1 Problem 10

Problem 10 of 25

Circles ω1\omega_1 and ω2\omega_2 have radii 33 and 1212, respectively, and are externally tangent to each other. Both circles are tangent to a line ℓ\ell and lie on the same side of ℓ\ell. Circle ω3\omega_3 is tangent to ℓ\ell and externally tangent to both ω1\omega_1 and ω2\omega_2, and it lies in the region bounded by ℓ\ell, ω1\omega_1, and ω2\omega_2, as shown (the figure is not necessarily drawn to scale). What is the radius of ω3\omega_3?

Solution

Let ℓ\ell be the xx-axis. If a circle of radius rr is tangent to ℓ\ell at (p,0)(p,0) and a circle of radius ss is tangent to ℓ\ell at (q,0)(q,0), and the two circles are externally tangent, then the distance between centers is r+sr+s, so (p−q)2+(r−s)2=(r+s)2(p-q)^2+(r-s)^2=(r+s)^2, giving ∣p−q∣=2rs|p-q|=2\sqrt{rs}.

Apply this to the three pairs. Let ω3\omega_3 have radius rr and touch ℓ\ell at x3x_3, and place ω1\omega_1 at x=0x=0. Then ω2\omega_2 touches at 23⋅12=122\sqrt{3\cdot12}=12, ω3\omega_3 touches at 23r2\sqrt{3r} (distance from ω1\omega_1) and at 12−212r=12−43r12-2\sqrt{12r}=12-4\sqrt{3r} (distance from ω2\omega_2, which is to the left of ω2\omega_2). Therefore 23r=12−43r  ⟹  63r=12  ⟹  3r=2  ⟹  r=43.2\sqrt{3r}=12-4\sqrt{3r}\implies 6\sqrt{3r}=12\implies \sqrt{3r}=2\implies r=\boxed{\tfrac43}.
