Solution

Let x=log⁡2ax=\log_2 a and y=log⁡2by=\log_2 b. Since log⁡8a=x3\log_8 a=\frac x3 and log⁡4a=x2\log_4 a=\frac x2 (and similarly for bb), the equations become x3+y2=5,x2+y3=5.\frac x3+\frac y2=5,\qquad \frac x2+\frac y3=5. Adding gives 56(x+y)=10\frac56(x+y)=10, so x+y=12x+y=12. Subtracting gives y−x6=0\frac{y-x}{6}=0, so x=y=6x=y=6. Hence a=b=26=64a=b=2^6=64 and a+b=128a+b=\boxed{128}.
