Problem 17 of 25

For a real number tt, let {t}=t−⌊t⌋\{t\}=t-\lfloor t\rfloor denote the fractional part of tt. How many real numbers xx with 1≤x<101\le x<10 satisfy {x2}={x}2\{x^2\}=\{x\}^2?

Solution

Write x=n+fx=n+f with n=⌊x⌋∈{1,…,9}n=\lfloor x\rfloor\in\{1,\dots,9\} and f={x}∈[0,1)f=\{x\}\in[0,1). Then x2=n2+2nf+f2x^2=n^2+2nf+f^2.

Claim: {x2}=f2\{x^2\}=f^2 if and only if 2nf2nf is an integer. If 2nf=m∈Z2nf=m\in\mathbb Z, then x2=(n2+m)+f2x^2=(n^2+m)+f^2 with 0≤f2<10\le f^2<1, so {x2}=f2\{x^2\}=f^2. Conversely, if {x2}=f2\{x^2\}=f^2, then x2−f2=n2+2nfx^2-f^2=n^2+2nf equals ⌊x2⌋\lfloor x^2\rfloor, an integer, so 2nf∈Z2nf\in\mathbb Z.

For fixed nn, the values f=k2nf=\frac{k}{2n} with k=0,1,…,2n−1k=0,1,\dots,2n-1 are exactly the 2n2n numbers in [0,1)[0,1) with 2nf∈Z2nf\in\mathbb Z. Hence the count is ∑n=192n=2⋅45=90\sum_{n=1}^{9}2n=2\cdot45=\boxed{90}.
