AMC 12 Mock Exam 1 Problem 18

Problem 18 of 25

Square ABCDABCD has side length 44. Circle ω1\omega_1 passes through AA and BB and is tangent to side CD‾\overline{CD}. Circle ω2\omega_2 lies inside the square, is tangent to sides BC‾\overline{BC} and CD‾\overline{CD}, and is externally tangent to ω1\omega_1, as shown. What is the radius of ω2\omega_2?

Solution

Place A=(0,0)A=(0,0), B=(4,0)B=(4,0), C=(4,4)C=(4,4), D=(0,4)D=(0,4). By symmetry the center of ω1\omega_1 lies on the perpendicular bisector x=2x=2 of AB‾\overline{AB}, and tangency to CD‾\overline{CD} (the line y=4y=4) means its radius is ρ=4−k\rho=4-k if its center is (2,k)(2,k). Passing through AA gives 22+k2=(4−k)22^2+k^2=(4-k)^2, so 4=16−8k4=16-8k, k=32k=\frac32, and ρ=52\rho=\frac52. (It touches CD‾\overline{CD} at its midpoint (2,4)(2,4).)

A circle of radius rr inside the square tangent to BC‾\overline{BC} (x=4x=4) and CD‾\overline{CD} (y=4y=4) has center (4−r,4−r)(4-r,4-r). External tangency to ω1\omega_1 requires the distance between centers to equal 52+r\frac52+r: (2−r)2+(52−r)2=(52+r)2.\left(2-r\right)^2+\left(\tfrac52-r\right)^2=\left(\tfrac52+r\right)^2 . The right side minus the second term on the left is 10r10r, so (2−r)2=10r(2-r)^2=10r, i.e., r2−14r+4=0r^2-14r+4=0, giving r=7±35r=7\pm3\sqrt5. Only r=7−35≈0.29r=7-3\sqrt5\approx0.29 fits inside the square, so the radius is 7−35\boxed{7-3\sqrt5}.
