AMC 12 Mock Exam 1 Problem 5

Problem 5 of 25

A rhombus has side length 1010 and one diagonal of length 1212. What is the radius of the circle inscribed in the rhombus?

Answer choices

Solution

The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular bisectors of each other. Half of the known diagonal is 66 and the side is 1010, so half of the other diagonal is 102−62=8\sqrt{10^2-6^2}=8, and the other diagonal is 1616. The area is 12⋅12⋅16=96\frac12\cdot12\cdot16=96.

The center of the rhombus is equidistant from all four sides, so the inscribed circle is centered there. Splitting the rhombus into four triangles from the center, the area equals r⋅4⋅102=20rr\cdot\frac{4\cdot10}{2}=20r. Thus 20r=9620r=96 and r=245r=\boxed{\tfrac{24}{5}}.
