AMC 12 Mock Exam 1 Problem 8

Problem 8 of 25

How many positive divisors of 24⋅33⋅522^4\cdot3^3\cdot5^2 are perfect squares or perfect cubes (or both)?

Answer choices

Show solution

Solution

A divisor has the form 2a3b5c2^a3^b5^c with 0≤a≤40\le a\le4, 0≤b≤30\le b\le3, 0≤c≤20\le c\le2.

Perfect squares: a,b,ca,b,c all even: 3⋅2⋅2=123\cdot2\cdot2=12 choices (a∈{0,2,4}a\in\{0,2,4\}, b∈{0,2}b\in\{0,2\}, c∈{0,2}c\in\{0,2\}).

Perfect cubes: a,b,ca,b,c all multiples of 33: 2⋅2⋅1=42\cdot2\cdot1=4 choices (a∈{0,3}a\in\{0,3\}, b∈{0,3}b\in\{0,3\}, c=0c=0).

Both (perfect sixth powers): a,b,ca,b,c multiples of 66, so a=b=c=0a=b=c=0: only the divisor 11.

By inclusion–exclusion the count is 12+4−1=1512+4-1=\boxed{15}.
